Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman is the Vanara God. Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Hanuman. In a child's language, on this day we celebrate Hanuman's birthday.

As per Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. On this day the idol of Hanuman is worshipped with flowers, orange sindoor, til, til oil, whole black gram and garland of Arka leaves. Hanuman is believed to remove all the troubles in life and hence also called. Sankat Mochan.

Hanuman is the child of Anjani and Kesari. He has many names Anjaneya, Pawanputra, Bajarangbali etc. He was a devotee of Lord Rama and had helped him fight against Ravana. The Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses) written by Tulsidas is chanted on this day. The chalisa describes the qualities of Hanuman - strength, courage, wisdom and his devotion to Lord Rama.

There are many stories of Hanuman mentioned in mythology. As a child he had eaten the Sun considering it to be an apple. He had the powers to increase or decrease his size. He had lifted the entire mountain to help find Sanjeevani for Lakshmana.

Apart from this day, every Tuesday and Saturday is dedicated for the worship of Lord Hanuman.
